To Tell the Truth
The polls are open on Election Day - 6:30 am to 7:30 pm .
There is no excuse not to vote
There is no excuse not to vote
My opponent, Renée Cahoon, recently ran an ad claiming that my votes didn't match the positions I have taken in this election. The ad claimed these votes showed big differences between my positions and hers.
Lets take a minute To Tell The Truth about Renee Cahoon's recent newspaper ad.
Cahoon's claim - I don't support a terminal groin because I voted against a resolution.
To Tell The Truth - Here is the resolution language:"The Town of Nags Head strongly supports the construction of pilot projects for terminal groin structures as well as jetties along the entire coast of North Carolina". I do not support jetties along the entire coast. Apparently, Mayor Cahoon does. I do support consideration of a terminal groin to make a beach nourishment program more effective.
Cahoon's claim - I twice voted to bring central sewage to Nags Head
To Tell The Truth - The board was asked to allow the extension of an existing sewer line to a vacant building in the Town's Industrial zoning district near the Fresh Pond. A tee shirt firm providing 10-20 new jobs wanted to open but needed the sewer line extended to protect Fresh Pond. This same question was considered twice for procedural reasons and I voted for jobs and the environment both times. Mayor Cahoon voted against small business and against protecting the environment.
Here are a few votes Renee chose not to included in her ad.
To Tell the Truth In January of 2008, a ban on fireworks was passed in Nags Head. I voted in favor of a ban, Cahoon against.
To Tell The Truth On the same day in 2008, the Board of Commissioners voted themselves an increase in pay of $200 per month. I voted against the increase, Cahoon voted herself a pay raise.
There are many votes where Renee Cahoon and I have differed, perhaps the most important is in votes about open government.
To Tell The Truth On September 2, 2009, the Board voted to "waive the attorney client privilege to the least extent possible..". In other words, only let the public know the minimum required. Our policy should be to allow the public to know to the broadest extent possible, and we should not hide behind our attorney. I voted against the policy but Renee Cahoon voted to let the public know as little a possible.
"Everybody knows that corruption thrives in secret places, and avoids public places, and we believe it a fair presumption that secrecy means impropriety." Pres. Woodrow Wilson
"The very word 'secrecy' is repugnant in a free and open society; and we are as a people inherently and historically opposed to secret societies, to secret oaths and to secret proceedings," Pres. John F. Kennedy, 1961
Please give me your support at the polls
We need A New Vision for Nags Head
